- Take one cup of puttu maavu to a bowl. Add oil and salt. Adjust salt to your taste at this stage itself. Add salt only for rice balls.
- Boil 1 cup of water. We need to add only boiling water to the flour. I used only 3/4th cup of water. I recommend you to boil 1 cup of water because we cannot stop stirring the mixture and boil some more water again.
- When the water starts to boil add it to flour and keep stirring the flour using a spatula simultaneously to avoid lumps . Do not use your hands to mix.
- Grease your hand with oil and make small rice balls.
- I used Idly pot to steam. I added water to the base and turned the flame ON.
- Now grease your tray with oil and place the dumpling.
- Now place them into the pot and close the lid. Cook it for 10 minutes on a medium flame.
- Meanwhile we need to make spice powder.
- Dry roast all the ingredients mentioned under INGREDIENTS FOR SPICE POWDER.
- Dry roast all the ingredients on low flame to avoid burning.
- If you want to make it quick just dry roast each ingredient separately on a medium high flame. Keep stirring frequently.
- 1st row : From right 1. Channa dhal , 2. Uradh dhal , 3. Cumin seeds and pepper ,
- 2nd Row : From right 1. Curry leaves, 2. red chillies, 3. Coconut
- Add few drops of oil before roasting red chillies.
- Dry roast the coconut till it is golden in colour.
- Now add all the roasted ingredients to blender and make a coarse powder. Don’t make it too fine.
- Take a pan. Add oil, When oil is hot add mustard seeds.
- When mustard seed splatters add spice powder, salt ( Only for Spice powder we already added salt for rice balls earlier)
- After 10 minutes take rice balls out from steam.
